Assessment of oral health status of elderly population living in retirement homes in Tunisia

Objectives: In a world where the number of elderly people is constantly increasing, the state of oral health is a real capital to preserve. The aim of this study was to assess the state of oral health of our geriatric population in the Tunisian retirement homes and to identify their healthcare needs.
Methods: It is a cross-sectional study carried out in Tunisia on people aged 65 years and older living in all the retirement homes that exist in the country .
The sample was composed of 511 subjects (324 men and 187 women) who underwent oral clinical examination according to a pre-established fact sheet.
Results: The main results of this study revealed that 70% of the subjects presented a poor oral hygiene, the prevalence of caries was 72%,the DMF index was 27.00, 40% were smokers, 30.8% presented mucosal lesions types "ulceration", 34.6% periodontal problems and 43.9% were totally edentates.
Conclusions: To consider the population healthcare needs, it is essential to have adequate and reliable statistical data on the oral health status of our elders. Also, an oral prevention program specific to the elderly should be introduced.
