Assessment of Knowledges of Plagiarism among Tunisian University Hospital Doctors

Objectives: To assess the knowledges of plagiarism among Tunisian university hospital doctors.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study conducted from May to October 2016. Recruitment was conducted among the University Hospital doctors of the six Tunisian faculties of medical sciences (Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry). Doctors were recruited by convenience sampling via a medical questionnaire dispatched in two ways: directly and via electronic mails sent to all the Tunisian university hospital doctors through the national health networks. The questionnaire written in French consisted of 11 questions related to the knowledge of plagiarism including three-choice questions (“yes” or “no” or “may be”). One point was awarded for each correct answer. Results were expressed as mean±standard-deviation (SD) and number (frequency). Student test and analysis of variance one way were used to compare quantitative data. Chi2 test and McNemar test were used to compare qualitative data.
Results: A total of 96 doctors (69 were females) responded to the survey: 39.6% did it through the electronic mail and 60.4% fill directly on paper. The average score for the doctors was 5.4±1.2 which is considered as a low knowledge of plagiarism. The average score of «knowledge of plagiarism» wasn’t influenced by the doctors grades ‘professor, associate-professor and assistant, respectively 5.1±1.5, 6.1±1.2, 5.8±1.6). Fifty one percent, 36.5% and 12.5% of doctors have, respectively, properly assessed, underestimated and overvalued their «knowledge of plagiarism». The difference between concordant and discordant answers was statistically significant (p<0.05).
Conclusions: Plagiarism is unknown to Tunisian university hospital doctors. It is important to award Tunisian responsible of the medical faculties about the plagiarism in medical field.
