Occupational Exposures in Dental Schools and Hepatitis C Virus: A Systematic Review of the Literature

Objectives: The aim of the study is to identify the modes of HCV transmission, to determine the circumstances of occurrence of occupational exposures and to specify the population involved in dental schools.
Methods: The systematic search was performed by two independent abstract reviewers using the electronic database PubMed. All articles with available inclusions up to September 2015 are included.
Results: A total of 9 articles are enrolled in this review.
Even though methods of reporting the data are different, all studies found that sharp injuries, more specifically needles (from 25% to 48%), represented the leading cause of occupational risks; Clinical incidents were the most frequent (more than 50%); Students represented the most exposed population, 68% at least according to our review.

Conclusions: There is a risk of HCV transmission in dental settings. The analysis of the collected data may assist in evaluating and modifying current practice or engineering controls, which will reduce the possibility of future incidents for all dental students and professionals.
