Effect Of Aging On The Repair Bond Strength Of Composite
Objectives: To evaluate the effect of aging composites in artificial saliva on the shear bond strength between fresh and aged composite.
Methods: 140 composite cylinders were fabricated with the aid of a silicone mould. 120 of these samples were aged in a solution of artificial saliva for 28 days while the remainder were left unaged. All 140 cylinders were then divided into seven groups of twenty each with the seventh group consisting of the 20 un-aged composites. Each group was subjected to a different surface preparation protocol. Following this, the composite cylinders were repaired by the addition of fresh composite onto the top surface to a height of 4mm. Shear bond strength testing was then carried out on the repaired composite blocks. Results: Aging in artificial saliva resulted in a reduction of 15.04- 21.1% in shear bond strength compared to un-aged composite.
Conclusions: Aging in artificial saliva was effective in reducing the repair bond strength of aged composite.
