Objectives: Toombak is a form of smokeless tobacco, locally made and consumed in Sudan. This study was set out to assess the health professional students’ perceived status as future role models for patients and the public regarding Toombak use cessation and to study the factors associated with it in Khartoum State, Sudan.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among health professional students enrolled in the third year in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry and nursing colleges in Khartoum state, Sudan, during 2013-2014. (8) Colleges (clusters) were randomly selected accounting for the stratum private/public. The number needed to be was stratified by the gender with a proportional probability to the size of the gender representation in each college.
Results: A 47.8% health professional student perceived health professionals as a role model. The older group reported higher than the younger group, while there was no difference in gender.
The positively perceived role model was found to be statistically significantly associated to those reported positive attitude towards the use of Toombak in public; those who confirmed having training on tobacco cessation in curricula and the students who reported the availability of Toombak control policy (p≤0.001).
In logistic regression model, revealed that tobacco cessation training and college policy prohibits the Toombak use was among the strong predictors of reported positive perception of role model among health professional students.
Conclusions: Training and college policies towards Toombak cessation will shape the future health professionals positive perception of their role model in Tobacco cessation programs.
