Qualitative Analysis of Chilean Oral Health Program for Pregnant Women
Objectives: In Chile, the Explicit Health Guarantee "Integral Oral Health of the Pregnant Women" includes a set of primary and secondary dental care benefits, with the ultimate objective of allowing the newborn to grow in a family environment favorable to health oral. The coverage at the national level is 70%, being key players for the success the health team. The main was to qualitatively explore facilitators and barriers from the perspective of different institutional actors involved, on the objectives and implementation of the "Integral Oral Health of the Pregnant woman" program, at the community level and at the central level.
Methods: A qualitative exploratory approach was carried out, with a phenomenological approach. Key referents and professional were selected from two Family Health Centers of the Metropolitan Region of the communes of San Joaquín and Quinta Normal and key referents at Central Level. Four discussion groups and four individual interviews were conducted and recorded according to a thematic script opened by trained researchers, after signing an informed consent. After the textual transcription was categorized, analyzed and interpreted its content.
Results: The Central Level considers that the objective of this program is to achieve a healthier population from healthy mothers and the perspective of the health team is to achieve integral health in the mothers and economic benefit. They emerged as facilitators that the program has human resources and associated equipment, which has favored its implementation, and as main barriers that beneficiaries are unaware of their guarantees and implementation depends on each local level.
Conclusions: The Chilean oral health program for pregnant women, having benefits guaranteed by law, makes it a unique program worldwide in the field of preventing oral pathologies from gestation and both the health team and gestors work to increase Its coverage and guarantees.
