SIgA Concentration Versus the Number of Lactobacillus in the Saliva

Objectives: A secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) is a dominant immunoglobulin in the saliva. Among others, it inhibits bacterial adherence to the oral mucosa and tooth surface, it neutralizes toxins, viruses and enzymes produced by microorganisms. The number of Lactobacillus (LB) colonies in the saliva positively correlates with the development of caries process and the amount of carbohydrates in the diet. The aim of the study was the analysis of sIgA concentration in non-stimulated saliva in relation to the number of LB.
Methods: The investigated group included 120 people aged 20-54 – 56 people smoked cigarettes, 64 did not smoke cigarettes. SIgA concentration in the saliva was assayed with the use of sIgA ELISA Kit (Immundiagnostik AG, Germany). The number of LB colonies with the use of CRT bacteria test (Vivadent).
Results: In the group of smokers with LB number equal or higher than 105 CFU/ml of saliva, median of sIgA concentration in the saliva was 900.00 µg/ml. In the group of smokers with LB number lower than 105 it was 924.20 µg/ml. No essential differences were stated in sIgA of smokers saliva both with high and low LB number (Z=0.05, p>0.05).
For non-smokers these values were 681.42 µg/ml and 673.84 µg/ml (Z=0.14, p<0.05) respectively. No essential differences were stated in sIgA concentration in the saliva of non-smokers with both high and low LB number.
Conclusions: Both in the group of smokers and non-smokers no correlations were stated between the number of LB and sIgA concentration in the saliva.
