The Effectiveness of Low Cost Turmeric (Curcuma longa) Mouthrinse in Plaque and Gingivitis Control: A Systematic Review

Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of turmeric (Curcuma longa) mouthrinse in improving plaque control and gingival health.
Methods: The PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and EMBASE electronic databases were searched along with hand searching of dental journals, up to February 2017, for randomized controlled trials presenting clinical, microbiological, immunological, and patient-centered data for the efficacy of tumeric mouthrinses when used alone or as an adjunct to mechanical oral hygiene as compared to placebo/control mouthrinses for controlling plaque and gingival inflammation in patients with gingivitis.
Results: The electronic and manual literature search resulted in a total of 58 articles out of which 2 randomized controlled trials evaluating the turmeric mouthrinses for control of plaque and gingivitis were included. These randomized controlled trials reported that freshly prepared turmeric mouthrinse was similar to commericially available chlorhexidine mouthrinse, when used as an adjunct to toothbrushing, in effectively reducing plaque and gingival inflammation in gingivitis patients based on the assessment of clinical and microbiological treatment outcomes. However, many important and trivial details of study design and conductance were lacking in these trials, and therefore, the quality of reporting and methods was generally flawed with unclear risk of bias.
Conclusions: Although the clinical trials reveal some promising results, the evidence concerning the clinical use of turmeric mouthrinses is lacking and needs further reinforcement with high quality randomized controlled trials based on the reporting guidelines of herbal CONSORT statement.
