Parafunctions Among Patients Aged 20-54 – Preliminary Study

Objectives: Parafunctions such as teeth grinding and clenching as well as biting foreign objects like pens, pencils are frequently and unconsciously repeated actions in the motor system of the masticatory apparatus. Parafunctions are the cause of dental abrasion, disorders in temporomandibular joint and periodontium. The aim of the study was the analysis of the frequency of parafunctions occurrence in relation to age of the investigated, their sex, status of cigarette smoking and practicing sport.
Methods: Socio-medical studies were conducted in the group of 86 people. Mean age of the investigated was 32.28. Women constituted 65.88% of the investigated, men 34.12%. Cigarette smoking was reported by 40.70%. Practicing sport (swimming, strength sports) was confirmed by 46.51% respondents. Study results were submitted to statistical analysis with the use of χ2and Mann-Whitney test. Statistically essential were test values of p<0.05.
Results: Teeth grinding was reported by 16.28% of the investigated, teeth clenching by 40.70% of the investigated, biting foreign objects by 25.58%. No essential differences were stated between age of the investigated and analyzed parafunctions: teeth grinding (Z = 0.27, p>0.05), teeth clenching (Z = 1.17, p>0.05), biting foreign objects (Z = 0.84, p>0.05). No correlations were stated between parafunctions and status of cigarette smoking (χ2 = 0.43, p>0.05) and practicing sport (χ2 = 0.75, p>0.05) by the investigated. The majority of women (80.36%) did not report biting foreign objects. Only 19.64% women reported it. The majority of men, as well, stated not to bite foreign objects – 62.07 % (about 20% lower than women). However twice as many men - 37.93% stated biting foreign objects (χ2 =3.88, p< 0.05).
Conclusions: In the investigated group biting foreign objects was reported more frequently by men than by women.
