Tooth Brushing and the Use of Oral Hygiene Aids
Objectives: Brushing teeth with the use of a toothpaste and the use of dental floss and toothpicks as oral hygiene aids are essential factors in the maintenance of proper oral health. The aim of the study was the analysis of the use of dental floss and toothpicks by the people from the investigated group in relation to the frequency of tooth brushing.
Methods: The investigated group included 86 people aged 20-54. All study participants used brush and toothpaste. Obtained study results were submitted to statistical analysis with the use of χ2, Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis tests. Statistically essential were test values of p<0.05.
Results: The mean age of the investigated who brushed their teeth twice a day was 33.80, more than twice a day 29.00, once a day or less 33.63 (H = 4.59, p>0.05). In the group of people who did not use dental floss, 70.97% brushed their teeth twice a day, 12.90% more than twice a day and 16.13% once a day or less. Respondents who used dental floss sometimes or every day were mainly people brushing their teeth twice a day or more than twice a day. They constituted almost 100% of the investigated among those using dental floss (χ2 =11.88, p<0.01).
People brushing their teeth twice a day declared in similar percentage (about 60%) using or not using toothpicks. Among people brushing their teeth more than twice a day 36.07% of the investigated did not use toothpicks, whereas in the group of people brushing their teeth once a day or less 24% of the investigated used toothpicks (χ2 =9.71, p< 0.01).
Conclusions: In the investigated group use of dental floss and toothpicks was more frequently reported by those who brushed their teeth twice a day.
