Development and Effectiveness of Tobacco use Cessation (TUC) in Dental Graduation Curriculum

Objectives: In India, a 1 % decrease in tobacco use would result in 7.8 million fewer tobacco users in turn reducing the tobacco-related morbidity and mortality in the short term. Public health dentists have been practicing TUC without any proper curriculum and foresee the future for dentist’s evidence based and effective cessation treatment a strong curriculum and training is a mandate. Hence a pioneer attempt was done in India to
1. Develop, Pretest and Piloting of a TUC curriculum for undergraduate dental students in Public Health Dentistry.
2. Check the effectiveness of curriculum by Pre- post evaluation of student’s knowledge, attitude in the present years and into next year.

Methods: An experimental control pre-post time series follow up trial was done among dental 3rd year, 4th year, Interns, externs, pass out students into clinical practice. In the first phase, the curriculum was developed with 6 theoretical modules by 10 experts. The next phase saw the pretesting and piloting on 15 students. The reliability and validity of the questionnaire was assessed. All the modules having lectures, assignments, resources, pre-post questions spanning 8 hours were implemented on the 3rd years. The final years were controls, whereas the interns/externs were standard controls. The pass out students were assessed to know the usability of orientation in internship into practice.

Results: 89% of students completed all the modules. 94% rated the modules as highly informative, and 68 % felt confident in TUC. The Pre-post in the current year and next year when compared showed an increase in knowledge from 28%, 85% to 89%, favorable attitude from 12%, 65% to 68% and practices from 0%, 40% to 60%. The ask (90%) and advise (82%) component was higher than others. When compared to controls the others groups fared in all the aspects.

Conclusions: The curriculum was rated well by students and was effective in increasing the knowledge, attitude and practices in dental students.
