Effectiveness of Gargling Tea in Decreasing Oral Bacterial Count

Objectives: to know the effectiveness of gargling black tea compared to green tea in decreasing oral bacterial count
Methods: An experimental clinical study was conducted with pre and post test control group design. The subjects were 30 dental students of University of Sumatera Utara, randomly divided into two groups where treatment group was given 15 ml of black tea and control group which was given 15 ml of green tea and each group were gargling for 30 seconds. The saliva was collected before treatment (pretest / baseline) and after treatment (postest). All saliva samples were brought to Microbiology laboratory of Mathematics Exact Science Faculty (FMIPA) for total bacterial counts using Plate Count method. T-test was used to analyze the differences of total bacterial counts before and after gargling and among two groups.
Results: The results showed significant decreased of total bacterial counts of treatment group which is 1556,60x103 ± 296,22x103 CFU/ml before treatment and 852,40x103 ± 236,765x103 CFU/ml after treatment and control group was 1644,66x103 ± 238,81x103 CFU/ml before treatment and 1001,00x103 ± 214,43x103 CFU/ml after treatment (p<0,05).There was no significant different in total bacterial counts of treatment group 704,20x103 ± 190,93x103 CFU/ml compared to control group 643,66x103 ± 260,98x103 CFU/ml (p>0,05).
Conclusions: In conclusion, both gargling black tea and green tea are effective in decreasing oral bacterial count.
