Evaluation of Surface Characteristics of Various Pulp Capping Agents Containing Bioactive Glass

Objectives: Biomaterials used in pulp capping therapy should possess certain characteristics such as biocompatibility, protect pulp vitality, adhere to dentine and the restorative material and also resist forces during restoration placement and function. Contact angle and surface free energy (SFE) are discussed to influence wettability and bonding ability of resin-based dental materials. This study evaluated the surface free energy and contact angle values of three different pulp capping agents.
Methods: Tested pulp capping agents in this study were Imicryl, Theracal LC and BinerLC. The specimens were prepared according to the manufacturers' instructions. A custom made, teflon mold was used to prepare a total of 10 specimens (height: 4mm; diameter: 8mm). Specimens surfaces were prepared with superfine polishing discs for 1minute at 1000rpm. The hydrophobicity of all materials was evaluated by measuring distilled water contact angles (EasyDrop Drop Shape Analysis System). Contact angles were determined at 23°C by the sessile drop technique. The SFE of the pulp capping agents was calculated with the aid of specialized software. Data were analyzed using One-way-ANOVA and Tukey-HSD post-hoc-test (alpha=0.05).
Results: Contact angle measurement of all materials was statistically significant (p<0.05). BinerLC group showed highest value for contact angle measurement (74,77±13,56) compared to Imicryl (35,35±12,89) and Theracal LC groups (55,14±11,12). SFE results for BinerLC (36,22) showed significantly lower values than Theracal LC (44,70) and Imicryl groups (46,20).
Conclusions: Biner LC showed better contact angle and surface energy values than other materials which may enhance better bonding ability in clinical use.
