Objectives: Caries experience may affect the students’ educational effectiveness and quality of life. The aim of this study was to determine the dental health among non-dental university students and its association with oral self-care behaviors, demographic and educative characteristics of the students.
Methods: We informed all students of Tehran University about two-day oral health screening program in the week of World Health Day by advertising in dining rooms, University mosque and all every faculties A questionnaire was filled for each person that asked about demographic and educational (age, gender, degree) information and oral self-care behaviors (daily brushing and flossing, using fluoridated tooth paste, last dental visit). Finally DMFT (Decayed, Missed, Filled teeth) and presence of dental plaque was examined by the two calibrated dentist. All participants received oral health instruction after the examinations. Statistical analyses was performed by SPSS 22.
Results: The number of participants was 99 (82.8% female) with the mean age of 24.5±6 years.( 18 to 48 years). Among all, 66.7% were B.S degree, 17.2% were M.S students, 6.1% were PhD students and 5.1% were medical students. . Among all 62.9% had visited a dentist during the past year and 31.4% brushed at least twice a day.
DMFT was 6.53±5.09 among which 2.1 was related to D, 0.7 to M, and 3.42 to F. Among all background, being older (p=0.043, OR=1.87) and not having a dental visit in the last year (p=0.003, OR=3.64) were in association with higher DMFT.
Conclusions: The DMFT index was rather high among the present students and most of it was related to the untreated caries. Low dental visit frequency and no desirable oral self-care behavior casts light on importance of oral health care training programs for all university students.
