Quality of Life and Patients’ Satisfaction with Basal Dental Implants

Objectives:
To evaluate and compare patients’ quality of life and satisfaction when changing from fixed and/or removable and/or conventional implant prostheses, to immediate loading basal dental implant supported prostheses.
Methods:
Sixty patients with a history of wearing fixed and/or removable and /or conventional implant prostheses, and who received basal dental implants supported prostheses (BCS design/ Ihde system), participated in the study.
Interviews were conducted using a questionnaire including four sections; Section A, dealt with sociodemographic data; Section B, included clinical examination; Section C, pertained to previous prostheses data (type, duration of use, patient perception of comfort, mastication, esthetics and speech, cause of change, implant knowledge and patient’s expectation; Section D, contained information about implants (evaluating patient’s comfort, mastication, esthetic, speech and need for emergency treatment).
Results:
The analysis of the questioner revealed that most of the patients were females, partially edentulous and aged between 40-59 years. Patients were mainly referred to hospital by other dentists. Patients chose dental implants because of caries or abutment fracture of fixed restorations or due to poor retention of removable prostheses. Respondents mainly expected a fixed restoration from basal dental implant treatment modality. Patients’ general satisfaction with basal dental implants was very high 7.7 out of 8. Patients’ comfort and mastication speech and esthetics were significantly improved. Males, who were 40-59 years old and patients who experienced both fixed and removable prostheses were more satisfied than other patients. Although some patients had complaints they were still satisfied and would choose same treatment modality again.
Conclusions: Basal dental implant supported prostheses (BCS/ Ihde System) have a positive impact on oral health quality of life and highly improve patients’ satisfaction.
