Clinical Evaluation of the Oral Hygiene Education’s Effects on the Children with Down Syndrome

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate and follow-up the oral hygiene education ‘s effects on the oral health of children with Down syndrome in order to investigate the changes that occured after treatment.
Methods: Our study population was 35 (18 girl and 17 boy) children with Down syndrome who were directed to our clinic from rehabilitation centres for oral examination. Ethical approval was taken and after consent forms and surveys that are filled by parents we examined the patients detailly. It is questioned age, gender, education status of parents, medical and dental histories and brushing habits etc. in our survey. The gingival index (GI), periodontal index (PI), bleeding on probing (BP) were recorded at the beginning. Then oral hygiene motivation and phase I therapy were made. All these indexes at the 1th, 3rd and 6th months after treatment were evaluated and recorded the values. Also the caries were detected and completely treated all the teeth at the clinic or under general anesthesia if it’s required. Clinical data were compared between time points using paired t-test (p< 0.05).
Results: Analysis of data revealed that the initial oral hygiene period influenced all clinical variables recorded (paired t-test p< 0.05). All the teeth were positive at bleeding on probing in the beginning along with that 30 of them at the 1th month, 23 of them at the 3th month and 15 of them at the 6th month were positive only after treatment. Depending on that there was a significant decrease in gingival index (GI) and plaque index (PI) values.
Conclusions: As a result, children with Down syndrome are more prone to periodontal diseases, depending on this oral hygiene education and it’ s long-term clinical follow- up are important in order to avoid from these diseases.
