Translation and Validation of Nepalese Version of GOHAI

Objectives: Translate and validate the GOHAI (Nepali version) from original English version.
Methods: Individuals’ ≥ 60 years (n=168) from seven old age homes are located in eastern Nepal were included in the study. Reliability and validity of the Nepali version of GOHAI was assessed.
Results: GOHAI questionnaire was completed by (n=168) elderly (79 males and 89 females) . The mean age (±SD) of the participants was 72.49 (±10.00) years. The mean GOHAI score (±SD) was 42.29 (±6.93) and ranged from 17 to 59. The internal consistency of the GOHAI showed a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.74 for the 12 items GOHAI Nepali version, which is very good. Analysis of discriminant validity showed that lower mean GOHAI score was seen in elderly with more number of missing teeth, decayed teeth however those who had more than one filed surface had higher mean GOHAI score. Mean GOHAI score was negative and moderately correlated with mean DMFT score and Pearson’s correlation was statistically significant (p=0.001).
Conclusions: The Nepali version of the GOHAI exhibited acceptable reliability and validity when used for elderly residing in old age homes and prove an important measure for assessment of oral health related quality of life of institutionalized elderly.
