Evaluation of Physical Properties of Pulp Capping Materials Containing Bioactive Glass

Objectives: This study evaluated the flexural strength and compressive strength of four pulp capping materials.
Methods: A teflon mold was used to prepare bar-shaped specimens (height: 4 mm; width: 8 mm) (n=20). Specimens of all groups (TheraCal LC, BinerLC, Activa-Bioactive, Imicryl) were prepared according to the manufacturers’ instructions. The compressive strength of each specimen was measured in the universal testing machine (1mm/min). The specimens for the flexural strength test were prepared using a rectangle stainless steel mold (2x2x25mm). Each specimen was subjected to three-point bending test at the universal testing machine (0.5mm/min). Data were analyzed using One-way-ANOVA and Tukey-HSD post-hoc-test (alpha=0.05).
Results: Biner LC pulp capping material shows significantly higher flexural strength (93,94±11,23) and compressive strength (228.58±22.67) compared to Activa-Bioactive (81.77±10.56, 208.12±19.44), Imicryl (78.51±8.97, 215.78±21.34) and Theracal LC (18.75±2.05, 110.92±19.21). The compressive and flexural strength values of all groups were significantly different from each other (p<0.05). The highest compressive and flexural strength values were exhibited by BinerLC group (228.6±22.7, 93.9±11.2) while lowest compressive and flexural strength values were exhibited by Theracal LC (110.9±19.2,18.8±2.1).
Conclusions: BinerLC pulp capping agent showed better mechanical and physical properties than those of other materials tested.
