Comparison Of Spectrophotometer AND F-ISE Analysis Of Bottled WaterFluoride

The accurate determination of the fluoride content in the water is important.Fluoride Ion Selective Electrode(F-ISE)and spectrophotometer are the most common methods for fluoride analysis in water."Objectives:"1)comparison of two methods .2)Evaluation of the fluoride concentrations in bottled water avaliable on the market in Isfahn city.3)Determination of accuracy of values printed on the bottle labels ."Methods:"10 common randomly selected commercial brands of bottled water were obtained from supermarkets in Isfahan city.16 bottles of each brand were purchased..Following calibration ,320 tests were conducted on each label coverd bottle using a (F-ISE)JENWAY ,3345)and spectrophotometer with SPANDS using a DR/2000)Hatch .The amount of fluoride for each brand was estimated, and comparison of two methods was specified through paired t-test and between the two groups using two way variance analysis and Schiff under spss software .The study was carried out in the water laboratory of the health school of the Isfahan university of Medical sciences In 2008."Results:"The (SD) fluoride content of bottled water samples was(0.15mgf/l&0.19mgf/l)with a range from (0.03 to 0.48,0.01 to 0.43)by F-ISE &DR/2000 spectrophotometer respectively.after controling the effect of brand,Differences between them were statistically significant(p value<0.001).In spectrophotometry amounts were higher than F-ISE. The fluoride concentration of all samples was lower than optimal concentration. Both methods indicated that the highest concentration of fluoride was seen in B10brand, the lowest was seen in B6.The correlation coefficient for linear association between two methods was(r=0.43).Two brands (B2,B8)shown the most differences, after excluding them, higher correlation coefficient was obtained.(r=0.88)"Conclusion:"This study showed that although in spectrophotometer method, the assessment of fluoride concentration is higher than F-ISE,spectrophotometer method can be as effective as F-ISE for measuring fluoride Ion ,so colorimeter should be accepted as clinically useful alternative to the electrode method. control over fluorides levels in bottled water is important
