Tobacco Use of Thai Dental Students in 2006

Objectives: This study aimed to survey on tobacco use including knowledge, attitude and practice on tobacco control among Thai dental students in 2006. Methods: The data collection followed anonymous self - administered questionnaire recommended by WHO as part of Global Health Professional Survey project. All dental students from 8 public dental faculties participated in the survey. Results: The response rate was 83%, 2,425 students. The findings indicated that 17% of dental students had ever smoked cigarettes. Three percent of the respondents were current cigarette smokers. Prevalences of smokers were 7% in males and 0.8% in females. 29% of smokers wanted to quit smoking now. More than 90% of students had positive attitude towards tobacco control. They strongly support the banning of cigarette sales to adolescent under 18 years of age, banning of all tobacco advertising and banning of smoking in public places. Ninety percent of the respondents stated they have been educated on tobacco and oral health. However, only 18% delivered a specific training on tobacco cessation techniques. 84% of students desired to be trained on counseling technique. It was also found that 2% of dental students reported regularly alcohol consumption. Conclusions: Prevalence of smokers was low in Thai dental students. A majority of students requested cessation - training program during their schooling. This survey was supported by Thai Health Promotion Foundation.
