Histological study of gingival grafts submitted to mechanical expansion
Objectives:The aim of this histological study was to evaluate the viability of free gingival grafts expanded mechanically. Methods:There were collected 16 samples of a mix tissue (epithelium and connective tissue) from the palate of 8 dogs (Beagle). Half of the samples were submitted to expansion treatment. After that process, they were grafted over the epithelium of bicuspidsx areas. At the contralateral area, it was grafted the same type of tissue, however without previous expansion. Biopsies were retrieved after 60 days of grafting and the tissues analyzed under light and laser confocal microscopy. Results:There were found no statistically significant differences between control and experimental groups. Conclusion:It may be concluded that this new type of increasing free gingival graft area, besides being biologically viable, increases in 50% the area of the grafts.
