Cross-Sectional Study on Secondary Impressions in the Complete Removable Prosthodontics Department
Objectives: The secondary impression is a dynamic impression that captures the functional envelope of peripheral tissues in addition to the support surface, defining the limits and volume of the future prosthesis and influencing its success. The aim of this study is : - to examine the evaluation criteria for secondary impressions - to analyze their validity and usefulness in the subsequent stages of the prosthetic process. Methods: This is a prospective and analytical study focusing on the examination of maxillary secondary impressions of fully edentulous arches. The study was conducted over a six-month period, from January to June 2023, in the Complete Prosthodontics Department of the Monastir Dental Hospital and University Clinic. The evaluation of the impressions was carried out using two questionnaires: one for the practitioner and one for the laboratory technician. Results: The analysis of 101 maxillary secondary impressions revealed that 99% had defects according to the practitioner, compared to 83.2% according to the technician. Regarding validation, and based on evaluative criteria, only 54.5% of the impressions were immediately accepted, while 11.9% were directly rejected according to the practitioner. The technician, on the other hand, accepted 55.4% of the impressions. The most frequently observed defects were compression and air bubbles, with respective rates of 36.4% and 24.4%. Conclusions: This study indicates that poorly defined anatomical features and insufficient recording are critical defects for the validation of secondary impressions according to the investigator.
