Quantitative and Qualitative pre-Implant Bone Analysis

Objectives: Imaging in oral implantology is an essential part of the diagnostic process, patient selection and surgical-prosthetic planning. A pre-implant radiological assessment is an essential tool in the field of dentistry.
Methods: A survey evaluating the knowledge of Tunisian dental practitioners concerning the pre-implant radiological assessment was carried out between June and December 2023 on a national scale and by using a questionnaire.
Results: Seventy-eight of 120 dentists requested a single radiological examination, while the others requested more than one pre-implant radiological test. Fifty-eight dentists mentioned that CT scan measurements are taken on oblique reconstructions perpendicular to the arch curvature, whereas 18 dentists thought these measurements were taken on panoramic reconstructions. The survey revealed that dentists mainly use the cone beam to measure bone height and bone thickness. Canal tracing and simulated implant placement were cone beam options used by only around forty of the participating doctors. This study also showed that dentists have insufficient information about bone types, since 16 dentists thought that bone type 4 corresponded to very dense bone, and finally only 36 out of 120 dentists measured bone density at implant sites.
Conclusions: Training in implantology is needed to improve dentists' knowledge in this field and optimize patient care.
