Dental Extracellular Matrices-Derived Scaffolds for Periodontal Regeneration : a Systemic Litterature Review
Objectives: The aim of this systemic review was to research and evaluate the therapeutic applications of dental extracellular matrices-derived scaffolds in periodontology. Methods: Bibliographic search was performed using the MEDLINE database, using the PubMed interface. Five Boolean formulas were used: (("Periodontics"[Mesh]) AND "Tissue Scaffolds"[Mesh]) AND "Tooth"[Mesh] ; (("Periodontics"[Mesh]) AND "Tissue Scaffolds"[Mesh]) AND "Dentin"[Mesh] ; (("Periodontics"[Mesh]) AND "Tissue Scaffolds"[Mesh]) AND "Dental enamel"[Mesh] ; (("Periodontics"[Mesh]) AND "Tissue Scaffolds"[Mesh]) AND "Dental pulp"[Mesh] ; (("Periodontics"[Mesh]) AND "Tissue Scaffolds"[Mesh]) AND "Dental cementum"[Mesh]. No filter related to the study design was used. Results: Fifteen final articles were selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria including a systematic review of the literature and 14 experimental studies on animals. A total of 7 matrices were explored in the selected articles. The collagen, HA/TCP, β-TCP and PRP scaffolds were mainly used. Seven types of stem cells were noted in the experimental studies and they were mainly PDLSCs and BMMSCs. The active molecules, used alone, showed no complete regeneration of the periodontal complex. The combination of three factors including the scaffold, active molecules and stem cells seems to be ideal to guide towards an ideal periodontal regeneration. Conclusions: Although decellularized dental matrix have shown their effectiveness in terms of periodontal regeneration, their use has also shown drawbacks. Further research is warranted to clarify the specific biological activity of these scaffolds in the periodontal regeneration process and the saftey of using them before implementing the therapeutic approach in human patients.
