Benefits of Self-Adjusting File During Endodontic Irrigation: Systematic Review

Objectives: this systematic review aimed to discuss the benefits of using self-adjusting file during endodontic irrigation and to compare the effectiveness of conventional endodontic irrigation with and without association with self-adjusting file.
Methods: the research was conducted on MEDLINE via PUBMED.
the Keywords was: "Self-adjustic file", "endodontics [MeSH]", "root canal irrigation [MeSH]" and "therapeutic irrigation [MeSH]".
A reading grid was elaborated to extract data.
After the selection of the articles, data were extracted and analyzed.
Results: From 59 articles found, 15 articles were selected after clitical reading. thes articles are 14 in vitro studies and one randomized clinical trial.
In order to judge the effectiveness of irrigation activated by SAF, these studies were based on different criteria: bacterial load, presence or absence of bacteria, removal of endocanalar debris, removal of the smear layer, removal of triantibiotic paste, elimination of calcium hydroxide, penetration of the irrigation solutions in the lateral canals or ti the apex, and apical extrusion of sodium hypochlorite and the debris.
Of the 15 articles selected, 12 studies found that SAF-activated irrigation was better than conventional irrigation. However, 3 studies judged this association as unjustified.
Conclusions: through this systematic review, we showed that in-vitro SAF- activated irrigation is better than conventional irrigation.
