Bruxism in TMD Tunisian Patients
Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of Bruxism, its signs and symptoms and associated factors among Tunisian temporomandibular disorders (TMD) patients.
Methods: A retrospective cross sectional survey was conducted on clinical records of patients from the department of functional exploration, pain and orofacial dysfunction of the dental clinic of Monastir from 2007 to 2015.
Results: Five hundred and fifty clinical records were selected. Patients’ mean age was 30.29±13.2. Slightly more than 60 % (61.3%) of the population belonged to the 19-40 years age group. The female to male sex ratio was 3.2:1. Bruxism was diagnosed in 24 % of TMD patients (n=132). Sleep bruxism was more prevalent as compared to awake bruxim (20.7% VS 9.5%). There was no significant difference between the two genders neither for sleep nor awake bruxism (p= 0.053, p= 0.247 respectively). The most common symptoms reported by bruxism patients were respectively myalgia (n=95; 72%), tooth sensitivity (n=33; 25%); TMJ pain (n=21; 15.9%) and headaches (n=7; 5.3%). A tooth wear was observed in 50% of cases (n= 66). A statically significant association was found between bruxism and psychological factors (p=0,002) and between bruxism and some TMD such myofascial pain (p<0.001).
Conclusions: This high prevalence of bruxism among TMD patients suggests a causal relationship between TMD and bruxism which could be considered as an etiological factor of TMD.
