Biogeneric Tooth Design: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Objectives: The aim of this systematic review was to assess the accuracy or naturalness of biogeneric tooth design. The aim of the meta analysis was to compare the naturalness of the occlusal surface of biogeneric tooth design with the naturalness of the occlusal surface of wax up design.
Methods: A broad search on Pubmed, Web of science, Google scholar and Scopus databases was conducted using terms related to the topic. No filters were applied.
Results: Thirteen references were eligible for this systematic review. Only four of them were eligible to compare biogeneric design and wax up design in terms of volume /area naturalness using as outcome Volume/Area discrepancy between biogeneric /wax up design and natural occlusal surfaces design. Two among them were eligible to compare biogeneric design and wax up design in terms of Z direction naturalness using Z direction discrepancy between biogeneric /wax up occlusal design and natural occlusal surfaces design as a second outcome. We obtained an effect estimate of 71.28 μm, 0.94 μm respectively in favor of biogeneric design. This confirms that the accuracy of conventional wax up design is better than the accuracy of biogeneric design, especially in Volume/Area.
Conclusions: Biogeneric tooth design is an intelligent algorithm that presents accurate and fast results to restore teeth but still does not compete with the accuracy of conventional wax up design, especially in Volume /Area. Therefore, further studies are needed.
