Mycotic Osteitis: a Case Report

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to call attention on the radiological and clinical aspects of mycotic osteitis that is relatively rare and usually confused with osteolytic pathologies of the jaw bones.
Methods: Through a clinical case compiled in the radiology department, whose radioclinical aspects very similar to locally aggressive osteolytic lesions, the pathological examination was in favor of mycotic osteitis
Results: Mycotic osteitis is a rare opportunistic fungal infection that can affect the jawbones, most often the mandible, as illustrated in our case.
The clinical and radiological signs are not specific and can often simulate a locally aggressive benign tumor, mainly the Giant Cell Repair Granuloma (GCRG).
The diagnosis is challenging, and it should be treated as early as possible. It relays on histology and/or detection of the organism by culture from the involved sites with identification of the isolate of the species level.
Conclusions: Since the radiological and clinical aspects might mislead the diagnosis towards local aggressively lesion, the dentist should keep in mind the eventual diagnosis of mycotic osteitis.
This infection can cause widespread necrosis of orofacial tissues in susceptible host. Hence, dental professionals must be aware of the possibility of this serious and fatal complication to avoid unfavorable outcome in clinical practice.
