In Vitro Study of Tobacco Effects on Thermopolymerizable Resins Used in Removable Prostheses

Objectives: Methacrylic resin is the most popular material for the realization of removable protheses. That's why we tested its mechanical resistance when it is exposed to tobacco smoke.
Methods: Two thermopolymerizable resins were tested. Tobacco is of the very common "Cristal" band. The 3-point bending and microhardness tests were carried out with a universal tensile-compression machine as well as a microdurometer. The resin test pieceS have been exposed for 21 days to cigarette smoke in a smokingS room. Their mechanical strenght were campared to unexposed speciemens.
Results: Statisticial analysis has shown that the flexural strength of the resins is not affected by cigarette smoke. Unlike microhardness( decrease between 25 and 35% of microhardness.
Conclusions: The mechanical behavior of thermopolymerizable resins changes for removable protheses depends not only on their structure, polymerization but also on external factors such as tobacco. The latter affects the material more particulary at the surface rather than at depth.
