Impact of Anxiety on Manducatory System : About a Prospective Study Among Tunisian Dental Students

Objectives: The aims of this study were to determine the anxiety levels during exams and to deduce its impact on the appearance or aggravation of Craniomandibular disorders in a group of dental students.
Methods: A sample of 100 dental students registered in the fifth year in the faculty of dental medicine of Monastir, Tunisia were enrolled in this study. Anxiety level was assessed using Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA). Students were also asked to respond to another auto survey evaluating manducatory symptomatologies such as articular and muscular pain, joint sounds and parodontal inflammation. Assessment of both anxiety and manducatory symptomatologies was done outside and during exams. Descriptive statistics and Student T test were performed.
Results: More than 90 % of students were aged from 22 to 25 years (23,5 ±2) with a sex ratio of 0,37. Results have shown a significant increase in total anxiety level 18,52 ± 8,37 in the dental students groups during exams ( P<0,01). Furthermore all manducatory symptoms evaluated were aggravated during exams and their prevalence seemed to be doubled . Then, a positive correlation was found between anxiety and algodysfunction of manducatory system ( P<0,01).
Conclusions: Currently, psychological alteration is very often mentioned as an essential risk factor in the genesis of craniomandibular disorders, which is proved in our study, leading us to conclude the importance of the early management of anxiety.
