Bruxism in Partially Edentulous Patients: a Cross Sectional Study

Objectives: was to evaluate bruxism prevalence and associated factors in partially edentulous patients with tooth wear in order to investigate whether tooth wear status can predict bruxism in this population.

Methods: One hundred and ten partially edentulous patients with tooth wear, seeking prosthodontic treatment, were included in the present study. They answered a questionnaire and underwent a clinical examination in order to assess occlusal status, bruxism activity and associated factors (psychological factors, sleep quality, temporomandibular disorders). Qui-square test was used for the statistical analysis with a significance level of 5%.

Results: Sixty-eight point two percent of this study population was classified as being bruxers. Nevertheless, no significant association was found between this parafunction and tooth wear status. The prevalence of bruxism decreases each time the edentulousness increases without any significant association between the two parameters. As associated factors, statistical analyses revealed significant correlation between bruxism and poor sleep quality (P=0, 02) but not with stressful lifestyle and temporomandibular disorders.

Conclusions: Tooth wear status is not predictive of bruxism level in partially edentulous patients since this wear can be the consequence of functional overload due to tooth loss. Poor sleep quality is an important risk factor related to bruxism.
