Apical Periodontitis : a Comparative Study Between Panoramic Radiography and CBCT Periapical Indices.

Objectives: To assess the prevalence of apical periodontitis (AP) in a Tunisian population using panoramic and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images.

Methods: A retrospective study was performed using panoramic and CBCT images of 30 Tunisian patients. Maxillary and mandibular teeth were evaluated for the presence of apical periodontitis. Periapical status was assessed using periapical index (PAI) relative to panoramic and CBCT. The Data were analyzed using Pearson’s chi squared test adopting a significance level of 5%.
Results: AP was assessed in 49 (6.08%) and 96 (11.92%) out of 805 teeth using respectively panoramic and CBCT images. AP affected the maxillary more frequently than the mandible. Analysis of the correlation between the two scoring indexes showed a significant relationship (p<0.001) between PR-PAI index and CBCT-PAI index.
Conclusions: CBCT images present high accuracy for the detection of AP.
