Assessment of the pain perception threshold in patients with temporomandibular desorders

Objectives: Pain in patients with temporomandibular desorders (TMD) has always been the concern of practitioners. To help us better understand the characteristics of this pain we have conducted a study on these patients to assess their pain thresholds.

Methods: A prospective survey was conducted on a population of 30 women with DTM consulting at the department of functional exploration, pain and oro facial dysfunction at Dental Medicine Clinic of Monastir.
The clinical examination allowed us to the musculo-articular sensitivity. The general and the musculo-articular pain thresholds were assessed with a pressure algometer. Our results were compared to a control group.

Results: Results:
Our results showed that the masseter is the most affected muscle (87%). The temporomandibular joint is painful in 60% of the subjects. Patients with temporomandibular disorder had significantly lower pressure pain threshold values than pain-free subjects.
Conclusions: Conclusion:
The increase in musculo-articular sensitivity in the presence of TMD has been proven and we note the need for the overall management of pain while taking into account aggravating factors.
