IADR Abstract Archives

A kAP survey about the prescription of dentures adhesives by Tunisian dentists.

Objectives: The use of dental adhesives remains a contentious subject for dentists: between those who follow a traditional approach considering prosthetic adhesives as a poor substitute that masks the defects of adjustment of the prosthesis and those who consider adhesives as a means to improve the retention and stability of the prosthesis.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the knowledge, attitudes and practices of Tunisian dentists regarding the prescription of dental prosthesis adhesives.
Methods: A KAP survey was conducted from February 2019 until April 2019, it interested the dentists practicing in the liberal sector in Tunisia. A digital questionnaire meeting the objectives of the study was developed by Google Forms and distributed to Tunisian dentists .
Data entry and analysis was performed on IBM SPSS Statistics 20.
Results: 412 dentists participated in the study, 90.3% of respondents to the survey are aware of denture adhesives and 61.2% of them frequently prescribe them. 29.3% do not know the mode of action of adhesives, 81.7% of dentists interviewed ignore the effect of zinc salts addition on the retention of the prosthesis, 51.7% of dentists said that xerostomia is an indication for the use of adhesives. 20.7% think that the use of adhesives increases patient satisfaction Vs 2.4% completely disagree.
Conclusions: Prosthetic adhesives are often used by Tunisian dentists, but attitudes towards these materials were not homogeneous . For this reason, it is important to devote a component related to these products in the initial training of dental students. At the same time, dentists should be asked to pursue continuing education related to this topic in order to better guide their prescription choices.
