Black stain and dental caries in preschoolchildren in Monastir, Tunisia.
Objectives:
Black stain (BS) is a specific type of external discoloration observed on the buccal or lingual surfaces along the gingival margin and firmly attached to the tooth surface.To assess the prevalence of black stain and to investigate its correlation with caries experience in primary dentition in 3- to 5 year-old children from the municipality of Monastir, Tunisia.
Methods: This a community-based descriptive cross-sectional study which focuses on children in preshool establishment in Monastir . It consisted on an oral examination of 393 children and a data collection through a questionnaire completetd by parents . The ANOVA test and the Pearson chi-square test were used .
Results: The overall mean dmfs was 1.42±0.1 .The caries prevalence was 49.9 %, while the presence of black stain was evident in 6.1 % of the children. Study revealed a marked decrease in the prevalence of ECC in children with black stain this relation was statiscally significant p=0.047.
Conclusions: The results suggested an association between black stain and a decreased caries experience at least in the primary dentition. Further studies are necessary to examine the etiology and whether or not black stain can protect against caries.
