Double and triple images in panoramic radiograph: experimental study

Objectives: Showing by an experimental study the mechanism of ghost images formation on panoramic radiograph.
Methods: This experimental study was conducted using an anatomical skull placed in a panoramic device according to standard procedures. It presents the formation, on panoramic radiographs, of ghost and real images caused by metal spheres, attached to different areas of the maxilla.
Results: A ghost image occurs when the metal object is located between the X-ray source and the center of rotation, and has a density that is sufficient to attenuate the X-ray beams.
This image subsequently presents the same morphology as the object, but with distortion, and appears on the opposite side and at a higher point than the corresponding real object.
Double image appears when an object or anatomical structure is located between the X-ray centre of rotation and the image receptor, but is intercepted twice during the exposure cycle.

Conclusions: Understanding the principles of ghost images formation in panoramic radiographs prevents incorrect diagnoses.
