Tongue squamous cell carcinoma: A case report

Objectives: the objectives of this work are to discuss the diagnostic elements and risk factors of tongue squamous cell carcinoma, to distinguish it from other clinically related lesions and to know the different therapeutic attitudes.
Methods: we report a clinical case of 38-year-old patient, ethylo-tabagic, who was referred to our department complaining of an ulceration of the right lateral edge of the tongue with raised exophytic margins and indurated base.
Results: A biopsy was done. The anatomopathological examination confirms the diagnosis of a well differentiated tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC).
The patient was referred urgently to the maxillofacial department for the necessary treatment.
Conclusions: TSCC is characterized by high lymphophilia and bad prognosis. The importance of locoregional recurrence rate within one year and the fatal outcome of these cancers lead surgeons to perform bloc resections, off the tumor limits, sometimes disfiguring, closed or not to cell and lymph nodes recess, postoperative radiotherapy, with or without chemotherapy.
Despite advances in detection and treatment, 5-year overall and disease free survival are steadily in the range of 50-60%.
TSCC is often linked to ethylo-tabagic terrain, so the best way to prevent it is still alcohol and tobacco withdraw.
