Lithiasis of Giant Salivary Glands: A report of 135 cases

Objectives: Describe the main epidemiological features and typical symptoms of sialolithiasis leading to appropriate treatment.
Methods: Retrospective analysis on 135 patients with sialolithiasis, collected at Maxillofacial departement at hospital of Sahloul Sousse between 1987 and 2016. During this period we have collected 167 files of lithiasis of the main salivary glands of which 32 could not be exploited for lack of clinical and paraclinical data.
Results: We noted a slight male predominance (58.5% of cases) and an average age of 42.6 years. The submandibular gland was largely the most affected with 89.30% of cases. The most common reasons for consultation were salivary herniation and colic in 94.58% and 74.82%, respectively. At the intrabuccal examination: lithiasis was palpable in 42 patients (31.11%) The standard radiography revealed the calculus in 50% of the cases for the panoramic and 70% for Mandibular occlusal radiograph. The sialography allowed to find the calculus in 69.2% of the cases. Surgical is still the most used method for sialolithiasis
Conclusions: The practitioner is often the first health professional with the opportunity to assess salivary gland pathology, and therefore needs to be aware of the presenting signs and symptoms of major salivary gland lesions.
