Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (Pindborg tumor): a case report
Objectives: The purpose of this report is to discuss pathological diagnosis and the main differential diagnoses of this tumor. Methods: We report the case of a 19- year old female presented with impacted tooth and swelling maxillary region. Results: A radiographic exam revealed a large radiolucent unilocular lesion associated with many impacted teeth. Surgical removal of the lesion was performed. Pathologic findings of this lesion was consistent with a calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor which demonstrated the presence of an epithelial proliferation made of odontogenic epithelial cells, organized in nests and clusters, associated with areas of extracellular eosinophilic amyloid-like materiel and concentric calcifications. Conclusions: The calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor is a rare benign epithelial odontogenic neoplasm. Its prognosis is good despite a locally rare aggressive behavior with possible bone and adjacent soft tissue invasion which can be avoided by complete surgical excision with tumor-free margins.
