Ameloblastoma: a rare odontogenic tumor, A study about 5 cases

Objectives: to study the anatomo-clinical characteristics of ameloblastomas and discuss the morphological features of its different histological sub-types.
Methods: we report 5 cases of ameloblastoma, diagnosed at our department of pathology of Fattouma Bourguiba university hospital of Monastir over a 12-year period (2006 -2018).
Results: we had 3 men and 2 women. The average age was 46.5 years (17-75 years). The main symptomatology was a painless mandibular swelling. Maxillofacial CT has found a characteristic “soap bubble-like” appearance in the majority of cases. The diagnosis was made on surgical specimens in all cases. The size of the tumor varied between 3.5 and 10 cm. The tumor was solid-cystic. The solid part corresponded to a greyish-white mass, soft, sometimes hollowed out by small cystic cavities. The cystic areas were multilocular, sometimes containing a gelatinous material. Histological examination revealed a double cell population comprising peripheral palisading columnar cells at basal layer with reversed polarity and stellate reticulum-like, suprabasal cells composed of loosely arranged angular cells. Follicular architecture was found in all cases, often with cystisation.
Conclusions: Ameloblastomas predominantly affect males. The mandibular localization is by far the most common. It is a rare tumor which diagnosis is based on pathological examination.
Its prognosis depends on the tumor size and the quality of the excision.
