Endodontic treatment outcome of 61 TDIs performed by one specialist

Objectives: To investigate prognostic factors infleuncing the endodontic treatment outcome (ETO) of traumatic dental injuries (TDIs).
Methods: Clinical records of 70 patients with 116 TDIs were reviewed in the Restorative and Endodontic Department of the Dental Clinic of Monastir, Tunisia. Complete files of 36 patients with endodontic treatments of 61 TDIs were retained for analysis, over a 4-year period. Demographic data, type and number of injured teeth, pulp and periapical status, as well as treatment management and follow-up period were analysed. Statistical analysis were performed using a p level of significance <.0.5.
Results: Patients’mean age was 22±9.6 years and a male to female ratio of 1.25. More than half of them (58.3%) had one injured tooth. The maxillary central incisor was the most affected (68.9%) by complicated coronal fractures (25%), extrusive luxation and avulsion, 21.2%, respectively. Slightly, half of TDIs were due to falls (51.8%) and splinting was performed in 25 % of the cases. Teeth with an apical periodontitis represented 40% (PAI : 3 -5). Root canal filling was performed in 85.2%, using warm thermplasticized gutta percha. The ETO was favorable in 86.9% of the cases. Type of the trauma was found to be a significant prognostic factor (p=.03, 95%IC : 0.028-0.035).
Conclusions: Within the limits of the study, the ETO is significantly influenced by the type of the TDI.
