Granular Cell Tumor Of Oral Cavity: Study Of 7 Cases

Objectives: Granular cell tumor (GCT) is uncommon benign tumors of neuroectodermal origin. Although this tumor can occur through-out the body, the oral cavity is the most common site, especially the tongue. GCT is a benign tumor and it has a good prognosis. Malignant GCT is encountered in only 2 % of the cases.
The aim of this work was to study the different clinicopathological features of GCT diagnosed in the pathology department of Monastir University Hospital and to compare them with the data of the literature.
Methods: This is a retrospective study about 7 cases of GCT occurred in the oral cavity and diagnosed from 2008 to 2018.
Results: The annual incidence in our study was 0.7 new cases per year. Our study was composed of 5 males and 2 females with an average age of 27.3 years.
The GCT was located in the tongue in 4 cases, in the lip in one case, in the sublingual gland in one case and in the gingiva in one case.
All patients had a surgical resection of tumor. Grossly, the tumor size was ranged from 0.4 to 1.1 cm. the cut section was yellowish, yellowish-white or whitish-grey.
Microscopically, the tumors were composed of sheets, or cords of polygonal cells with abundant eosinophilic granular cytoplasm, with regular, small and oval nuclei. No nuclear atypia or mitosis was detected.
During the follow-up, local recurrence was observed in only one case.
Conclusions: The GCT is a benign tumor occurs at different body sites with preponderance to the oral cavity. The tumor is treated by a complete surgical excision.
