Association between obesity and oral health

Objectives: To compare oral health variables between obese and normal weight subjects.

Methods: Tunisian subjects were recuited to participate in this cross-sectional study. General information were obtained using a predetermined questionnaire. The level of plaque were recorded using the plaque index (PI). The gingival index (GI) was used to evaluate the gingival inflammation. The depths of the sulci/pockets were probed with a periodontal probe. Periodontitis was defined as the presence of at least ten sites with a probing depth ≥ five mm.Stimulated saliva (SS) was collected for five minutes. The volume of SS was determined and divided by the duration of saliva collection. Then, 0.5 mL of each saliva sample was placed in a tube. The pH was measured directly using a pHmeter.

Results: The two groups were age, sexe, and socioeconomic level matched. Obeses and normal weight have similar percentages of systemic diseases, PI and tooth brushing frequency. The GI and tooth mobility showed no associations with obesity. Statistical significant differences in the two groups’ probing depth, DMF/T, flow rate and baseline pH were observed.

Conclusions: Associations were found between oral health and obesity. The choice of obesity measure in oral health studies should be carefully considered.
