oral lichen planus and lichenoid lesions: a case series study

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to investigate, through a retrospective study, clinical, histological and therapeutic features of oral lichen planus (OLP) and lichenoid lesions (LL) and to highlight their association with systemic disease, as well
Methods:

A retrospective clinical study was conducted at the department of oral medicine and oral sugery of SAHLOUL Hospital in Sousse from January 2013 to September 2018. We collected patients diagnosed with OLP and OLL according to the WHO diagnostic criteria modified by van de vaal and van der meij (2003). Clinical variables such as age, sex, medical conditions and medications,, clinical form of OLP and treatment were analysed. The assessment of the results was done by Excell software.
Results: We evaluated a serie of 22 patients( 5 males and 17 females) diagnosed with OLP (17 cases) and OLL (5cases). Patients’ age varied from 53 to 87, with a mean of 65 .A medical history was found in 17 patients (78%). Among them , 7 patients have auto immune pathology(4 goujerot sjögren syndrome, 2 autoimmune thyroiditis and psoriasis) and more than half (58%) are under medical treatment. The lesions were spread over the entire oral mucosa with significant cheek mucous location. An extra-oral location was noted in 3 cases. the main treatment was local corticotherapy (Solupred® as a mouthwash) and an additional general corticotherapy (Cortancyl®) for one patient with vulvo vaginal Gingival syndrome.
Conclusions: These results showed that OLP could be associated to an auto-immune disease. Further studies are needed to better investigate this association.
