Eagle syndrome, from clinical presentation to diagnosis and treatement: a three decades retrospective study.

Objectives: the objectives of this study were to assess the clinical and radiological features of eagle syndrome and to discuss the treatment modalities of this rare syndrome.
Methods: We conducted a descriptive retrospective study over 29 years above Eagle syndrome cases collected in the maxillofacial surgery department at Sahloul university hospital and ENT department in La Rabta Hospital, managed during the period starting from 1988 to 2017. The studied variables were: Age, sex, reason for consultation, duration and evolution of the symptomatology, radiological investigations, result of the xylocaine test, treatment, postoperative operations and complications
Results: seventeen patients met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. There were 14 women and 3 men, with a sex ratio of 0.2. The average age was 40 (25 to 59 years). The most common reasons of consultation were: facial pain, neck pain, retromandibular pain, dysphagia, earache, and vertigo. The average consultation time was 3 years. The unilateral manifestation was much more frequent (12/17 cases) than the bilateral one. The average of the radiographically measured length was 37.73mm on the right side and 39.2mm on the left side. The average length resected was 25.6 mm. The average length of residual PS after surgery was 12.8mm. the treatment was a surgical resection in all cases with a regression of the symptoms in 80% of the cases.
Conclusions: The diagnosis of Eagle syndrom can be difficult since its variable feautures and clinical presentations. The treatment of choice is mainly styloidectomy. It gives an almost complete resolution of symptoms.
