Comparative study of periodontal status in smoker and non-smoker patients through salivary markers

Objectives: The aim of this study was to comparative study of periodontal status in smoker and non-smoker patients through salivary markers.
Methods: A total of sixty subjects aged 20–65 years were included in the study and divided into three groups: periodontally healthy individuals (Group 1), subjects with periodontitis chronic (Group 2), and a subjects smoking (≥10 cigarettes a day) with periodontal parameters of Group 2 (Group 3). Periodontal parameters of, plaque index (IP), bleeding index (IB) and probing depth (PPD) were measured using standard indices and criteria. 3mm of saliva was taken, ELISA technique was using to determined salivary tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8).
Results: The mean G1 was lowest for Group 3, but the mean probing depth of Group 3 was highest (1.5 ± 0.6 vs 5.3 ± 1.8 p=0.001) . The mean TNF-α level of Group 3 was significantly different and higher as compared to healthy Group (71.27±13.06 vs. 17.54±3.46 p.g / ml, P=0.001).
The results showed that mean level of MMP8 for Group 3 (202.2±2.03 pg/ml) was significantly different (P=0.001) and higher as compared to Group 1 (54±3.02 pg / ml) and Group 2 (128±1.05 p.g / ml). Indeed, The mean level of proinflammatory biomarkers of all subjects showed positive and significant correlation with their periodontal status.
Conclusions: Our study shown a profound relation between periodontitis status and smoking on salivary markers of periodontal disease (TNF-α and MMP-8) in chronic periodontitis subjects in comparison to healthy controls
