DMF index in patients with hypoplastic amelogenesis imperfecta : a cross sectional study.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the DMF index of patients having hypoplastic amelogenesis imperfecta with control patients.
Methods: For this cross-sectional study, the DMF indexes of 11 patients diagnosed with hypoplastic amelogenisis imperfecta (AI) and 24 control patients were evaluated. The study occurred between October 2017 and June 2018 in the removable prosthodontics department of the Faculty of Dental Medicine of Monastir. The DMF index was clinically evaluated with the support of radiography.
Results: Patients with AI showed less tooth decay with a total of 51 decayed teeth,3 missed teeth due to dental caries and 10 filled teeth out of 246 as a total number of explored teeth. This has been compared to the control patients who showed 30 decayed, 338 missed and 33 filled teeth out of a total of 380 teeth. Most of the caries were observed in the occlusal and proximal surfaces of the first molars. The incisors come in the second place. The average DMF index of the patients with AI was low as evaluated at 0.2, compared to the control patients with a DMF index at 1.53.
Conclusions: The study showed that the AI is characterized by a low rate of DMF index. This might be due to the histological composition of the tooth surface of these patients.
