Salivary Composition in Type 2 Diabetics with Periodontal Diseases

Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to compare the salivary composition in type 2 diabetic patients with periodontal diseases and controls.
Methods: Full-mouth oral exam excluding third molars was performed by a single examiner for 47 type 2 diabetics and 50 controls. Unstimulated whole saliva (spitting method) was collected from subjects in fasting, after raising the mouth with water to remove any debris. pH was meseared by dipping a pH paper into the salivary specimen. Then salivary flow rate was calculated (Navazesh & Kumar method) and expressed in mL.min-1. Samples were subjected to centrifugation (5000rpm/10min/4°C).
Calcium (Arsenazo method), chloride and potassium (potentiometric method), total IgA (nephelometry) were estimated using a Beckman autoanalyzer. Statistical analysis were performed by the SPSS 20.0 version.
Results: Potassium, calcium and chloride were significantly higher in patients compared to controls (p < 0.05). Total IgA levels and salivary flow rate were significantly reduced in patients (p < 0.05). Whereas, no significant difference was found in pH levels (p > 0.05).
Conclusions: Salivary composition was altered in diabetic subjects with periodontal diseases.
