Effects of ionizing radiation on fetus’s bone marrow: Experimental approach on Swiss mice.

Objectives: Pregnant women still fear radiological investigation. The purpose of this study was to determine the dose of x-ray radiation that interferes with the development of Swiss mice bone marrow.
Methods: An overall number of 28 animals were included and divided into 3 groups: G1 (n=4) served as a control, G2 (n=12) was irradiated, in utero, on the 11th gestational day and G3 (n=12) was irradiated on the 18th gestational. Each irradiated group was divided into 3 sub-groups, receiving, respectively, increasing doses of irradiation: 40 mSv, 80 mSv and 120 mSv. After the birth of fetuses, both maxillary and vertebral column bone marrows were histologically investigated for cellular density.
Results: Fetuses irradiated with 40mSv x-ray doses on the 11th and 18th gestational days didn’t show any variation in cellular density of their bone marrows. However, when fetuses were irradiated with 80 mSv and 120 mSv x-ray radiation, a decrease of cellular density was observed. This alteration was more important during the last period of pregnancy with higher doses.
Conclusions: This study shows that bone marrow cellular density is altered on the 18th day of pregnancy with high doses of irradiation. For routine dental examination, x-ray radiation doesn’t exceed 40 mSv.
