Brown tumors of the jaws ; is surgical treatement always necessary ?

Objectives: The aim of this presentation, is to focus on the importance of the biological diagnosis of the brown tumor in hyperparathyroidism patients specially when their condition is unknown. and to put the finger on the importance of medical treatement that can, in some cases, replace the surgical one.

Methods: it's about two original cases of patients who were diagnosed for brown tumor of the jaw. we performed a comparaison between surgical and non surgical _ conservative _ treatement.
a litterature review is than presented to emphasise our results
Results: In the first case, the patient was diagnosed with brown tumor of hyperparathyroidism after the surgical removal of the lesion and the extraction of the tooth that was though to be infected.
in the second case, the diagnosis was made based on the biological and radiological features of the lesion before any surgical procedure.
we were conservative and no extractions were needed.

Conclusions: based on this finding and the litterature review , the diagnosis of brown tumors of the jaw is based on the biological investigations that can be very helpfull for the maxillo facial surgeon in order to prevent unjustified surgical treatement.
